SUMMARY: It’s New Year’s Eve 2000 and Sarah and David are forced to meet each other again at an in common cast party that Joss is throwing. It’s hard to see each other again as they have broken up for about a year ago and Sarah is now dating Freddie while David is single. Yet they try to put on a happy facade and have just about convinced themselves that it is better this way when the evening suddenly takes an unexpected turn that forces Sarah & David to ask themselves if their feelings for each other really have died?

DEDICATION: To my friend Madelyne, who suggested that I should write a New Year’s fic. This one is especially for you.

FEEDBACK: Yes please. I’ve put down several hours into this whole thing all ready so I would really like to know if you appreciate it or not. Please no flames.

CHAPTER 1

The room was packed with partying people, all wearing their fancy gowns or suits as they mingled around the room, with their champagne glasses in their hands, chewing on snacks, smiling and posing for publicity pictures as they happily chatted about a little bit of everything.

Joss Whedon the show’s producer smiled at yet another person in the crew when he was once again congratulated on the latest episodes. The Buffy/Angel joined New Year’s party had been his idea and it seemed to be a brilliant one judging from the happy people in the room. The entire Buffy and Angel sets had been asked to be there, so now the stars, crew, stunt people, writers, producer’s etc. were gathered to ring in the New Year together.

So it seemed to be a happy event for some of the people in the room, or so it seemed to David one of the show’s leading stars. He faked yet an other smile for a reporter’s camera and tried not to look over to the other side of the room where his old co-star Sarah Michelle Gellar was holding court, chatting with people and glancing lovingly at her boy friend Freddie Prinze jr. between kisses and giggles.

He had tried to avoid her just like she had avoided him. But tonight of all nights they had been forced to be at the same place because of work and that was also how David considered tonight. ‘It’s a working night strictly so I must act professional’ he thought to himself as he sighed for the fifth hundred and eleventh time. Because no matter what he tried to tell himself his heart knew the truth and that was that it hurt to see her with Freddie.

It was New Year’s Eve 2000 and thinking back on the past year David didn’t really have much to feel happy about. ‘No 2000 was a crappy year so 2001 can only be better’ David thought to himself. ‘In fact it’s weird how things never works out the way we’ve planned them. Last year I would have loved to celebrate New Year’s with Sarah and now I can barely look at her.’

Yes last year at that time they had been a couple, one of the most discrete once in Hollywood though but still a couple and they had been blissfully happy. However he should have known that it wouldn’t last. After all they had gotten together in late October after holding back their feelings for each other for years of filming. He still wasn’t sure what has set it off though. ‘Probably it was the separations of the shows that made us realize things’

Yet it had been foolish to think that it would last since he had filed for divorce just about a week before they started dating and the divorce then didn’t get finalized until April. ‘So a divorce in April, thereafter a terrible rebound relationship with Cat-girl and then this complete fall out with Sarah after our break up. Gee 2000 really was my year.’ David couldn’t help but being a bit sarcastic as he thought back.

Yet what hurt the most was that terrible feeling of loss and those eternal thoughts of what could have been. ‘If only the press hadn’t found out, or if only my divorce had been finalized earlier maybe Sarah and I would have stood a chance...maybe it would have been me kissing her tonight instead of that over smiling little brat.’ But David didn’t believe in what could have been’s, even though he in his heart knew that a part of him still loved Sarah he also knew that it was a fruitless kind of love since she had moved on.

*

Sarah smiled up at Freddie. Glancing lovingly in his eyes as she faked yet another laugh at one of his crappy jokes. She too felt uneasy tonight. There was the funniest feeling and she just couldn’t put her finger on it until she happened to look over Freddie’s shoulder and for a moment her eyes met David’s on the other side of the room.

‘He looks so cold, so distant’ Sarah thought as she could feel her muscles tense. ‘That’s what wrong’ she then realized. ‘Being at the same party as David...no being at the same party as my ex. With my new boyfriend’ she then corrected herself and started for the first time to wonder if it had been such a good idea to bring him.

But then she decided upon that it had been a brilliant idea since even though they were broken up a part of her still cared for David, in fact even more then that and she didn’t trust her own heart when she was alone with him. ‘I mean after what happened at the publicity party last May I have good reasons not to.’ Yet a part of her felt sad thinking about what had happened to them since last year. ‘Last year I was with David, we were a couple and very much in love, this year I’m with Freddie and even though I do love him in a way I always thought that I somehow would end up with someone a bit more...I don’t know exciting I guess.’ Sarah thought to herself.

No matter how much she tried to deny it she still found David the most sexiest man of all times and it hurt to see him look so good over at the other side of the room when she knew what a coward there was under the surface. ‘Yes David sure is a coward and a jerk for dumping me’ Sarah reflected knowing all too well how much he had hurt her. ‘He had been unpredictable while Freddie was safe and humorous when Freddie was dry...and stop it! What the fuck am I comparing my ex with my new boyfriend for? Freddie loves me and he doesn’t deserve that.’ Sarah thought.

Yet it was hard to bear the thought of what was left of her once love affair with David. ‘We used to be so right, he was my lover and my best friend and now he is just...someone in the crowd, someone I hardly don’t speak to or even know anymore.’

Sure he had tried to make it sound like it was a mutual decision when he had suggested that they should stop seeing each other in early February but she had known better. He had made the decision without her and then dear ol’ Freddie had come along in exact the right moment when she was vulnerable and started courting her. So naturally she and Freddie had ended up dating and knowing that it didn’t took David long to move on too. So every meeting ever since had been infected....

‘Except maybe the Publicity thing in New York when we kissed...’ yet that was something Sarah felt extremely bad about these days. ‘Sure it had just been a couple of innocent kisses, yet if we wasn’t supposed to have been on stage at that time who knew where it could have lead to.’ The thought scared her since after the way he had burned her she was very certain of that she wanted nothing to do with him again. Sarah then refocused on the man in front of her.

“So are you enjoying yourself, honey?” Freddie asked her and Sarah nodded and said,

“Sure a night at work what can be more fun?”

And they kept on talking for yet another while and soon Freddie was back at telling his stupid prank stories about how he had fooled that co star of his on Halloween. Even though it might had been a fun story the first time she had heard it the 7:th time it really had lost it charm.

So when Charisma called on her from the other side of the room she was almost relieved to go, or at least until she saw where she was heading. ‘David’s there! Damn it now I must talk to him, gee that’ll be fun’ she thought to herself before she steeled herself and gave them one of her charming smiles.

“Hi Charisma” she said and gave her old time friend and co-star a hug before she then turned to David. “Oh hi David” she said and tried to play indifferent.

But even though she was an actress that was one act she didn’t really succeed with. ‘Damn it, he still does that to me and he shouldn’t’ she thought as her heart started to beat faster and the palm of her hands started sweating ever so lightly. Being that close to him made her nervous and most of all she just wanted to walk away.

“Sarah” he just replied in an as stiff voice as hers. “So how have you been?”

“Fine, you?” She asked.

“Okay I guess” he just replied as he tried to avoid eye contact.

“Oh well if there was nothing more I think I’ll better get back to Freddie, I guess he wonders where I am with his soda” she said and David made a frown at the mentioning of her new boy friend.

“But it was nice to...” she then went on and made a turn as to leave when she suddenly felt David’s hand catching her arm as to stop her.

“What?” She asked slightly annoyed as she turned around.

“Well...um...Joss sort of wants us to...have one of these publicity pictures taken.”

“Oh shit! I’m not in the mood for more pictures” Sarah said. ‘And certainly not with you’ she then added mentally.

“Do you really think that I am? However Joss wants it and he’s the boss so...” David started off saying.

“Okay I get it let’s get it over with” Sarah then said and did some publicity things with David.

However after about 20 minutes they were finally done and by that time the tension between them had started to ease up a little and they could even laugh together at the photographer’s silly B/A questions.

“Oh well I think that I’ll better get back to Freddie now, it seems like he is starting to get a bit bored” Sarah said as she started to search the room for her boyfriend.

“Yeah I guess that you’d better and I should...

“Find your date?” The words had come over her mouth before even thinking on it.

In fact she was pretty sure of that he didn’t have one and this was her way of getting sure. Because if he in fact would have one she knew that she would have been very jealous.

“Yeah right...”he started off saying but then he saw her eyes getting colder again and for some reason he decided to level with her. “...um actually no. I didn’t bring one but I should get going as I’ve promised to pick up Ally and Alexis at the airport.”

“Oh right, Ally did mention something of that they would fly in late and who can blame them, I mean for someone who’s not from the east coast this party in between Philly and New York must seem like a sucking idea.”

“Yeah I guess so, even though I’m sort of glad since it enable me to get back to my family in Philly later tonight.”

“Yeah I know what you mean, I’m...we are heading back for New York later tonight as well.”

‘Great she and Freddie’ how he hated her way of saying that.

“Oh” he then just said. “Well I guess that I’ll be seeing you later then” he then started to excuse himself but then Charisma showed up once more.

“So how did the publicity thingy go?” She asked cheerfully.

“Okay I guess” replied Sarah.

“Yeah it was okay” David said. ‘Typical that she had to show up right now, I really should get going and she has that special look on her face. Like she’s up to something.’

“Well that’s great so I was thinking...” Charisma started off saying but was then soon interrupted by David.

“Sorry girls I’d love to hear you chat but I have an errand to run” he therefore said.

“An errand?” Charisma asked in disbelief.

“Yep picking up Ally and Alexis at the airport” David announced as he made himself ready to leave but Charisma then grabbed his arm as to stop him.

“You’re not thinking of driving are you?” She then asked.

“Sure am” David replied.

“But you’ve had three drinks, you really shouldn’t do that...” Charisma started to tell him and Sarah could feel her eyes getting wide with surprise.

‘David’s planning on driving and unsober?’ the thought came like from nowhere. ‘But that’s plain stupid. He can’t do that!’ she then added as she against her will started to get a bit worried. But then she really didn’t have time to reflect much more on it since before she knew it Charisma had turned to her.

“Sarah you haven’t had any drinks have you?”

“No not yet...” she started off saying but then she realized what this was heading and now it was too late to turn back.

“Good then you can take David with you and pick up Ally and Alexis” Charisma said. ‘Me going away with David alone in a car? Has she completely lost her mind.’

“Um...I guess I could but...why can’t they just take a taxi?” She asked.

“Well actually they just called the taxis were cancelled due to the weather so that’s why I promised to get them” David explained.

“Oh well okay I’ll go...” she started off saying but then she threw a glance at David and added, “Alone.”

That last word really got to David since it hurt to hear that she didn’t want him around but then Charisma said,

“No Sarah I really don’t think that it’s such a good idea. The roads are starting to get slippery due to the snow so it’s quite dangerous to be out there even for a sober driver” Charisma carefully said.

“How dangerous?” She immediately asked.

“Oh not too dangerous I just mean that it’s good to be two in case of an emergency...not because there would be one but still” Charisma then added.

“I’m not sure maybe it’s not such a good idea to go at all then?” she said.

“Nonsense it’s absolutely safe, besides someone got to pick up Ally and Alexis so if you won’t do it I will” David offered and in that instant Sarah knew that she was heading out for the roads since she just couldn’t let him do it.

“Okay fine...I’ll go then...” she started off saying and then she threw a look David’s way and added. “...with Freddie!”

Sarah then started to look around for her love but after some minutes when she finally found him sitting in a chair it became pretty clear that he wouldn’t be able to go.

“I’m sorry Sarah but there was prawns in that sandwich cake and you know that I’m allergic to prawns, in fact I’m not feeling too good” Freddie apologetically told Sarah and she sighed deeply as she knew that he wouldn’t be able to go anywhere.

For a moment she almost considered staying at the party with him or maybe taking him home but then her heart told her that if she didn’t go to pick up them David would. ‘We may not be a couple anymore but I wouldn’t want it on my conscience if he gets hurt and the roads are more dangerously’ so she then decided to go anyway.

“I’m really, really sorry about this are you sure that you’ll be okay if I go?” Sarah asked for the eleventh time.

“Sure it’s okay, I’ll be fine, besides I have little Michelle here keeping me company so as long as you are back before midnight it’s fine by me” Freddie said in an attempt to seem brave.

“Yeah I promise that I’ll take real good care of your boyfriend Sarah” Michelle smiled at her TV sister and Sarah nodded and said.

“I know you will sweetie” and then she turned to Freddie. “And honey I promise to be back before midnight, besides it only takes 20 minutes to drive to the airport so my guess is that I’ll be back within less then an hour. In fact I know I will be” she said reassuringly and then she gave Freddie a short kiss on the mouth. “You’re the best” she then said and David felt a need to say something too.

“Yeah that’s my man and don’t worry I’ll take good care of your girl friend” David said and patted Freddie’s shoulder.

Freddie then sighed as he for the first time realized that David was going with her.

“Just as long as you don’t take too good care of her” he then mutters but neither Sarah nor David pretends to hear him as they walks away and Michelle then tries to reassure him.

“Don’t worry Freddie, I know that Sarah loves you and besides they are going to the airport not to Vegas and they’ll have company for more then half of the time so really nothing’s going to happen.”

Freddie then seems to consider what she has said for a while before he calms down. ‘She’s right they are just going to the airport and they’ll be sitting in a freezing car like almost all the time so really what could happen? Nothing nothing’s going to happen and all this doubt is ridiculous, it got to be the food’ he then thought. However at that point neither one of them knew how wrong they were...

To be continued...

CHAPTER 2

The snowfall had been bad all ready when they had left the party and 15 minutes down the road it started to get even worse. The roads were slippery and narrow and they still seemed to be far away from the civilization.

“I don’t get it we should have been at the airport by now” David complained.

“I know but that’s in normal good weather, heavy snowfall you know?” Sarah said.

“Oh right, gee how could I ever forget? I mean the windows are all white and I can’t see a damn thing, I don’t even know how you can keep the car on the road” David said.

“Well someone has to but it sure isn’t easy” Sarah replied.

“I can see that, so where do you think we are anyway?” David asked.

“What do you mean we are on our way to the airport of course” Sarah said.

“Really how come that, that sign says Bethlehem 30 miles that direction then?”

“What you don’t think that we are lost do you?” Sarah asked as she started to panic.

“I don’t know” David replied. “All I know is that there was no Bethlehem on the way to the airport.”

“Are you sure?” Sarah asked.

“Well not completely but come on that name it’s sort of hard to miss” David then said but then he saw her beautiful blue green eyes starting to get wide with worry and since he didn’t want to worry her he added. “Of course I could be wrong maybe this is just a short cut to the airport.”

“Yeah it got to be” she then said a little bit too quickly as she tried to sound much more sure then she really was.

*

However another half an hour later there was no use in pretending any longer and they both knew it.

“David the road is getting narrower again.”

“Well I can see that, I take it that this wasn’t a shortcut after all, like someone here seemed to believe” she then added in a more accusing voice and turned to him.

“Oh yeah right why don’t we blame me for it? After all I’m not the one sitting behind that wheel!” David said.

“Yeah but it was you who said it could have been a shortcut really if you hadn’t I could have turned around by now, maybe we’d even been at the airport and then...” Sarah started off saying but then she stopped herself since she knew that he was right. “Okay you win, I wouldn’t have, so where do you think we are anyhow?”

“Well my guess is that we are heading for the mountains” he said slowly as he really didn’t want to admit it.

“The mountains? But there is nothing but ski resorts and...” her voice trailed off as she started to get scared.

‘Wildness’ David finished the sentence for her mentally. However neither of them said what they were both thinking since they really didn’t want to admit that they were lost, in the middle of nowhere and with not a soul around but each other.

‘Don’t panic, at least I’m not alone, David’s here and I do got my phone so...yeah right my phone’  Sarah then remembered. “Of course our phones David!”

“What?” He asked slightly confused.

“Did you bring your cell phone?” she then asked and suddenly he got exactly what she was getting at.

“Of course our phones why didn’t I think of that before, pull over so we can try it” he then said and Sarah then stopped the car at a smaller road near a road cross and they got up their phones and started to dial.

“Shit there is no net connection!” She then exclaimed as she had tried to get her phone working several times. “How about yours?” She said her eyes pleading with him to tell her it worked and no matter how much he hated it he had to be honest with her.

“Sorry Sarah...”

“It’s dead too? No it can’t be! It supposed to work!” Sarah’s voice was starting to get all upset and he could tell that she was near panicking.

“Well tell me something that works in this fucking weather? We are in the middle of a snowstorm for crying out load, we should be happy as long as the car’s still running!” He then said a little bit more upset then he had planned to be.

“Okay let’s get going there got to be a way back” she then said and he agreed but as soon as she started to turn on the motor they soon realized that they had bigger problems then that.

‘Much bigger problems.’ David thought as Sarah exclaimed. “Fuck!”

“What is it?” David asked even though he all too well knew what it was.

“The car won’t start!” She screamed.

“Here let me try” he offered.

“No you’re drunk!” She said angrily. “Why did you have to be drunk? If you hadn’t I wouldn’t have gone and none of this would ever have happened!”

“So this is all my fault now? Come on I don’t rule the weather and besides I wasn’t drunk I had three small glasses of light beer I could have driven by myself just fine but you insisted on coming along, so really I won’t take the blame for this!” He said just as upset.

“You had beer? Gee why didn’t you tell me?  I mean I thought that you had three huge glasses of Champagne!”  She exclaimed.

“Well I didn’t...” he started off saying and then they were silent for a while until she finally said,

“So why didn’t you?”

“What?”

“Have champagne? I mean it’s New Year’s Eve.” She said.

“Maybe so but well I guess I wasn’t in a party mood. I mean who wants to hang out with your colleagues on New Year’s anyhow?” He said and she nodded. ‘Yeah really who does except Joss?’ he did have a point there.

“Well I see what you mean, really I think that this whole party was a sucking idea! In fact when we get out of this I’m going to ask Joss to give me double payment for this!”

“Well that’s the spirit” he said and when she still looked all confused he added. “I mean we will get out of here you know?”

“I know” she said.

“So give me the key please...Sarah, the key?” David demanded and when she still didn’t move he added. “Do you have to smell my breath or something what’s wrong with you, why don’t you believe me anymore?” Sarah startled by his words.

‘Smell his breath? I haven’t done that since last year and...maybe that wouldn’t be....no! I trust him, right?’

“Here you go!” She then said and as he tried to get the car started she said.

“David?”

“Yes?” he answered slightly annoyed.

“Do you really think that there is something wrong with me?” Sarah said in a small voice.

“No of course not I...Shit!” He then exclaimed.

“Still dead huh?” She asked even though she already knew the answer.

“Yep sure is so I guess that we won’t be going anywhere tonight” he said.

“We’ll get to spend the night together...” Sarah started to say and then she stopped as she had realized how it had sounded.

David looked at her with an intense gaze and for a moment he almost thought that he saw some of the old Sarah in her. ‘The Sarah I used to date’ he then added mentally.

‘Oh God he’s giving me that look like he used to this is getting awkward but oh well we’re in a car so...wait we are in a car?!’

“David does this mean that we must spend the night in the car? I mean it’s freezing cold and I...” she started saying as panic started to get the upper hand of her and David knew it.

‘She’s panicking and well...I got to stay calm here there got to be a way out of it, we can’t sleep in the car it’s too cold and...I could keep her warm, that could...no!’ he thought as he remembered that they were through but then something interesting caught his eye.

“Not necessarily” he then said.

“Not? But where have you planned to I mean...” Sarah started of saying confusion shining through her eyes.

“Well do you seen that sign over there by the road?”

“Yes it says...Mountain village hotel...Hotel! There got to be people around here, come on let’s go” she then said in an eager voice.

“Yes but you can’t be serious about walking there in this weather?” He said.

“Of course I am besides do you have any better ideas? I mean hanging around the car is freezing and we can’t just wait until it passes, you know?” She said.

“Okay you are right” he then agreed.

‘After all the road must be pretty near the house so it can’t be that far’ he thought as he got out of the car and they started walking towards the light...

*

However a couple of hundreds meters was a long way to go in that weather with the snow hitting them in their faces and when they finally got to the entrance of the hotel lobby they were both exhausted.

“Help! We need help!” Sarah stated as soon as she saw the middle age woman behind the check in desk.

“Our car died down the road, we would need some cables and stuff to start it” David filled in but the woman just shook her head at them.

“Oh no you don’t, you’re never going to get that car to start in this weather” the woman said. “And even if you were the roads are all blocked because of the storm. I’m surprised that you two even got up here, I thought that they were impossible to drive on all ready.”

“Oh really in that case can we please borrow a phone?” Sarah asked and then she turned to David. “I’m gonna have Joss send out a chopper for us” she explained but David he just shook his head.

“Sarah if the roads are blocked how are they going to get a chopper here?” He asked.

“Well I’m not going to spend the night here with you...” she started off saying.

“Fine you don’t have to sleep with me...” he started off saying and then too late realized his Freudian slip.

‘Sleep with him as in making love? He wants me to...oh God no!’ Sarah’s thoughts were rushing in a fast speed in her head as she tried to block out the inappropriate memories of how it had felt like those times last year when his body had been next to hers. Apparently she didn’t succeed very well since she could feel her cheeks getting hot.

The woman behind the desk looked amused as she looked at them. ‘Ah a young love couple having a little disagreement, that’s so cute!’ She thought and then she smiled at them convinced that whatever their differences were they’d soon forget all about them

“...Um I mean this is better than the car and it does seems like a pretty nice place” David then tried to explain and she reluctantly agreed.

“Okay let’s spend the night but I so need to phone first. I promised Freddie to be back before midnight and...”

‘Yeah right, Freddie, I had almost forgot about him, darn!’ David thought to himself but then the woman behind the desk said.

“I’m sorry but the phones are all cut off too...”

“What are you saying?” Sarah exclaimed clearly upset. ‘I can’t even phone him? No! There he’ll be at that crappy party, food poisoned and worried sick and I’m stuck in the mountain with David...that’s not the way it supposed to be at all!’

“I think what she means is that the phones are out, I’m sorry honey but you just have to phone him some other time” David said in a calm voice as to comfort her and she did feel a bit calmer hearing him say that.

“Okay so I guess that’s it then, we are stuck here and nobody knows where we are...”

“Sarah we don’t even know where we are” David said and as the woman noticed their confusion she said,

“Oh but that’s easily fixed you are in Mountain village it’s really not more than a ski resort, see it’s situated right here between Bethlehem and Scranton” she said and showed them on the map.

“Oh really? Did you hear that David this is so the place we wanted to be at right?” She said teasingly and he agreed.

“Sure is” he said sarcastically.

“So how did you end up here anyway because I take it that you weren’t going skiing?” The woman started to ask.

“Well actually...” David started to explain.

‘No don’t tell’ Sarah thought and then she suddenly interrupted him.

“...It’s a long story.”

“Yeah really it is and we really shouldn’t... so do you have two bedrooms please?” David then asked and the woman looked at them confused.

“Two? Sorry but I thought that...” she started off saying as she saw them in fact they did have a couple of rooms free since the place was pretty much dead but then she decided not to tell. So she therefore went on.

“I mean all our rooms are out rented, however we do have a few cabins free...”

“So we take two cabins then” Sarah said.

“Sorry but there is only one available” the woman said.

“But you said a few?” David said.

“Yes but in case you haven’t noticed there is a blizzard coming and the other cabins are too far away from here...”

“A blizzard?” Sarah and David exclaimed in unison.

‘Great so now there’s a blizzard’ David thought.

“Yes in fact you were pretty lucky to get here on time a couple of more minutes out there on the road and you wouldn’t been able to make it up here. So there is one cabin about 50 meters from here so take it or leave it?” Sarah and David looked at each other for a minute and their eyes locked as they made a silent agreement.

“We’ll take it” Sarah said.

“Okay so names please?” The woman said and without thinking David said.

“David Boreanaz and this is Sarah Mi...” but then he could feel Sarah’s elbow in his ribs.

‘Oh no he stated his real name how could he do that? I mean now the woman will recognize us for sure’ Sarah thought and then quickly decided to state her own name before the woman would know.

“I’m Sarah, um...” she started of saying as she tried to think of a last name. ‘Shit she’s smiling, she’s getting it and now it won’t take long until the entire world knows that we’ve been...’ But then the woman said something completely else.

“Boreanaz?” She asked with a helpful smile and in the relief that she hadn’t recognized them Sarah was all too eager in agreeing.

“Yes, yes Sarah Boreanaz, that’s me!” She said in an all too cheerful voice and David looked strangely at her.

‘So when did she start to use my name this is...’ he thought but then the next thing the woman said really caught them off guard.

“Oh so you are married then after all, I wasn’t sure after all that talk about separate rooms and...”

“Married?” Sarah asked in surprise and then she suddenly realized that she had used his name. “Um...you mean...”

“Actually...” David started off to explain and the woman then said,

“So you are not married but the names...wait there’s something about them, like they sort of were familiar...” and then David all of a sudden understood what Sarah had been trying to do so he quickly covered it.

“...we’ve been married for like 2 years now, right honey?” David said and put his arm around Sarah’s waist.

“Sure we’re just like any other normal happy couple, so could we please have the key now?” Sarah asked as she put up her hand on David’s chest.

“Come on you said there is a blizzard we’d like to get there before then” David added and the woman said.

“Sure, here you go and wait a minute, take this also...” she said and handed them a bottle of champagne.

They stared at her for a while and the woman went on. “After all it is New Years. Just consider it as a welcoming gift to Mountain Village ski resort.”

“Well thanks” Sarah said.

“Oh you’re welcome, we just hope that you’ll have a pleasant stay here despite the circumstances Mr. and Mrs. Boreanaz” the woman said and her word startled them both.

‘Mr. and Mrs. Boreanaz? Oh God she thinks we’re married. How did we ever get into this mess?’ Sarah thought. ‘Yet the names...they sound kind of...nice’ she then reflected as memories of happier times started to wash over her.

Because there had been a time when she had thought that she actually would become the next Mrs. Boreanaz and being close to him now it was confusing...almost like all her defenses had started to break down again as all the old feelings started to come alive.

‘Pleasant stay?’ David thought and looked over at Sarah. ‘Yes maybe it’ll actually will be, maybe this was meant to happen and if it was I sure won’t be saying no.’ He then thought and immediately felt a little better. Yes maybe this was fate and if it was there was no point in trying to hold back their true emotions for each other. Whatever will happen it was meant to be...

To be continued...

CHAPTER 3

Sarah closed the door behind her as she and David finally got to the cabin. Sure it was just 50 meters from the main house but in this weather it was 50 too many and they both knew that with the storm getting worse all the time as the blizzard approached their chances of getting out there in the morning were slim.

“So I guess this is it then...I mean you and I in a cabin in the middle of nowhere ringing in the New Year together...” Sarah said and tried not to emphasize on the together. Yet she did and it didn’t go unnoticed by David.

“Yeah I guess so but you know it could be worse, we could have been alone or still on the road and who knows what would have happened then? At least here we’ll be warm and safe...” he started off saying.

“Or we could have stayed at the party and never ended up here in the first place...” Sarah started to say in a sad voice.

The prospect of not celebrating New Year’s with Freddie was a bit disappointing but...

“Sarah!” David demanded and as she looked up at him with question in her eyes he went on. “Please it’s not like I would like to be here either, but since we are here there is no use to play the what if we hadn’t game because...”

“...it doesn’t change anything” she filled in his sentence and he nodded in agreement.

‘Oh well if I can’t celebrate it with Freddie I guess this is as good as it gets and really me and David used to be friends long before we’d ever dated and he can actually be really sweet and caring when he wants too and...really this isn’t bad at all...’ Sarah then thought to herself before she went on.

“Okay you are right, so let’s make the best of it, I mean you and me alone like this I can think of worse places to be.” Sarah smiled at him as she finished the sentence.

“Yes there are definitely worse places to be.  I mean in a way this sort of makes up for last year when...” David then stopped himself.

‘...When what? We were together?’ No he couldn’t say that. However his words didn’t go unnoticed by Sarah.

‘Last year? Yes then I surely wanted to be with him and...’

“I know...it’s weird really last year I wanted nothing more then to be together with you for New Year and now when I am...” she started of saying.

“Everything’s changed, it’s okay I know that you aren’t my girl anymore so you can say it but you should know that sometimes I do wish that things had turned out differently for us” David said.

“Me too...” Sarah started off saying but then realized her mistake. ‘No I should not admit that I miss him that just leads to hurt and...’ she thought so therefore she quickly went on.

“I mean let’s not play the what if game as you said. Really there’ll be plenty of time for that late...um let’s just check out the cabin. After all I’m starving for yo...food, so do you think there is anything to eat here?” Sarah then corrected her Freudian slips and tried to calm down but in a way she couldn’t.

‘I’m going to spend the night alone with David in a cabin’ her heart sang out and no matter how much she tried to deny it that thought made her feet feel like Jell-O.  ‘Me too...but that means that she has missed me too’ David thought as he could feel his heart starting to become hopeful. ‘Sure she is with Freddie now but he’s miles away from here and we are all alone in a cabin and what’s up with the I’m starving for yo...part? Was she really going to say that she was starving for me?’ David couldn’t help but wondering and as his eyes met hers he knew that it was true.

‘Yes Sarah still has feelings for me as well!’ he then thought and suddenly the prospect of spending the night in a cabin alone with her sounded very appealing. Then he noticed that she was still looking at him like she expected him to say something so he said,

“Yes food is good, really let’s check out the place. I mean there got to be some somewhere and I’m starving for yo..” David then started off saying and then he stopped and put his hand on his forehead for a minute.

‘He’s starving for me too?’ Sarah thought as her heart started to pound faster. ‘He wants me!’ she realized but then she remembered that she was with Freddie. ‘God this is so not good...this is...’

“ Sorry” he then added and she put up her hand.

“Really don’t say another word it’s...let’s just check out the cabin huh?” She said and he nodded in silent agreement.

*

About 10 minutes later though they had gone throw the place carefully and there really wasn’t much there. In fact the cabin just had about two rooms all together which one of them was the bathroom. There was a huge room that apparently was a little bit of everything, kitchen, bedroom and sitting room.

There was a huge double bed at one side of the room that had some sort of curtains for it as to give some privacy and then there was a microwave and some junk food to warm up in the fridge. Then there was a TV that naturally was out and a couch and table that served both as socializing spot and eating place. There was a shower in the bathroom but due to the storm the water had froze in the plumbing system.

“Gee this place really is luxurious” Sarah said sarcastically.

“Not your best hotel I take it” David added.

“So not, I mean it’s cozy but the service on this place, no room service, no water for the shower and...”

“Well at least the electricity is still working, so would you like to have some pizza?” David asked as he put down the champagne bottle and two glasses on the table next to the vase with a rose in it.

“Not really I mean I’d probably put on some weight and then I...”

“Nonsense, you got to stop with this ridiculous diet of yours you are not going to put on weight, okay? Besides I thought that you were starving and there really isn’t much to choose on here” David said.

“Okay, you are right, I do got to eat even though it’s just...”

“It’s what?” David asked as she stopped.

“It’s just that I feel so ugly when I eat that kind of food and it’s...”

“Sarah listen to me you are not ugly how could you ever be I mean you are one of the most beautiful girls I’ve ever s...”

‘Oops! No I shouldn’t have said that’ he then realized his mistake.  ‘David finds me beautiful?’ Sarah thought to herself and smiled as she said,

“You think I’m beautiful?” The words had come over her lips before she knew it and David just looked at her.

‘Should I deny it? No the damage is already done and it’s no use in lying. Besides if I say no she goes back to her whiney I don’t wanna eat that phase.’

“Yes I do, I mean I have eyes and...” he stopped and she caught him looking down her dress.

“David you are looking...um...thanks I guess, you know you are pretty sex...good looking, I mean good looking, yourself” she then said and then she added. “So Pizza it is then!”

‘She was going to say sexy wasn’t she? Wow this is working out better then I thought’ he then thought before he said,

“Yes and champagne don’t forget about that I think that just because this New Year didn’t turn out the way we planned we should still celebrate.”

“You’re right in fact after everything that’s happened tonight we might need it, but don’t drink it all at once it’s still an hour left for midnight” Sarah said and David agreed and went and warmed up some pizza slices and thereafter they started to eat. Then he looked at her and said,

“I came to think of something, do you want me to sleep on the couch tonight?”

“Huh?” Sarah asked since the question had caught her of guard. “Why would you wanna do that?”

“I mean in case you haven’t noticed there pretty much is just one bed here and I don’t know if us in bed together is such a good idea...” David started off saying and Sarah felt confused.

A part of her thought that ‘No it’s definitely not a good idea’ But then it was an other part of her that wanted nothing more then getting down under the covers with him. ‘I’ll better watch it or that’s where we’ll end up’ she then realized.

‘So what if we do then? I mean we are both adults and if we want it...yeah right Freddie, really I got to stop having these thoughts’ She then wondered a while how to tackle that one but then she came up with a perfect way to play him.

“Oh but I think that you should take the bed since you’re wounded” she replied and he looked at her confused for a moment but then he got it. ‘Ah she’s talking about that Buffy scene from the Angel episode in season one that we filmed’

“Oh you take the bed, I can take the floor believe me I’ve had worse” he therefore replied and she smiled at him.

“So you do remember when we filmed that scene?” She said.

“Yes how could I ever forget, first season of Buffy and Joss thought that we had wonderful chemistry together” David said.

“That’s because we had” Sarah replied sadly.

“I think that we still have” David said and she tried to consider that for a minute and then he went on. “In fact I don’t know about you but maybe we should ask Joss for a Buffy & Angel reunion kind of thing for the next crossover?”

“Yeah our love...I mean their love never should have ended in the first place so yeah we probably should but I’m not really sure that he’ll listen since he loves holding the fans in suspense. Like do you remember that time after Angel turned evil and when Joss thought that...” Sarah started off saying and before long they were too caught up in memories and laughing at old times to even notice where they were and how they’d came there.

All that existed was the present and Sarah forgot all about Freddie and the party all that existed was David and as she spent time with him she realized just how very much she had missed him. In fact it was like they started to rediscover each other and as they did all the scares they'd caused each other slowly started to heal...

*

“And then after he went out in the canoe it tipped!” David said and Sarah was laughing her head off at the story he was telling her about an incident during the filming of a previous Angel episode that year.

“That got to have looked so funny, I wish that I could have seen it!” Sarah exclaimed.

“Yeah it sure was and he was so wet and...”

“Freezing?” Sarah added and suddenly she didn’t sound all that amused anymore. David then stopped for a while and gave her a long look and as he noticed that she was shivering he asked,

“Sarah are you freezing? I mean those clothes does looks kind of wet...”

“A little” she admitted. Then she asked. “You?”

“Well a little, I mean walking several meters in a blizzard does makes you a bit cold and wet you know?”

“Yeah tell me about it, in fact if we would have been smart we should probably have gotten out of these wet clothes as soon as we came here...” David gave her a weird glance and she then added. “...pneumonia you know?”

“Yeah right and we can’t have that Joss would probably freak if his two leading stars got sick at the same time” David said. “Um...so would you like me to light a fire? I don’t know if it’ll do much good now but...”

“There’s a fireplace? Why didn’t you say that at once?” Sarah asked in an excited voice.

“Yes can’t you see it it’s right over there!” David said and pointed and Sarah nodded as she realized that he was right.

“So what are you waiting for? Get it on!” She demanded and he jokingly said:

“Oh right little miss I give demands and you obey.”

“Just do it, huh?” She said and gave him a playful hit on his butt when he got up.

“Hey, I’m going to get you for that one!” He said and she said.

“Later, now first the fire because it is cold you know?”

So he went and lit the fire and thereafter he walked back to her and sat down next to her with his arm around her shoulder. Then they just sat there for a while as the fire was casting a nice red glow over the room and their faces. They were both deep in thought and then David said,

“So what’s on your mind?”

“Oh nothing really I was just thinking of how nice it is sitting close to you like this again. I mean after our break up last year I thought that we’d never be as close again” she said.

“I know what you mean, I didn’t either and it feels good to know that I was wrong” he said.

“Wrong about what?” Sarah asked with questions in her eyes and then he went on.

“I don’t know wrong about us?” David said.

“Is there really an us? I mean last year I was so in love with you and then...have you ever thought about whatever happened to us?” Sarah said.

‘She was in love with me...that’s like in past tense, or?’ he thought as his heart started to sink. ‘But if she wants nothing from me now why does she wants to know what went wrong between us?’ He then added.

“Many times” he started off saying and then he went quiet as he tried not to look at her. ‘We are crossing a dangerous line here and I’m not sure that we should’ he thought but her eyes were pleading with him for answers.

“Please David if thing’s ever going to be all right between us I need to know, the way we are now it’s just too painful. I mean we’ve been avoiding each other for more then a half year now and...I’ve really miss you!” She then finally admitted.

‘She’s missed me! But that’s great...I mean...wait missed me as a friend or a lover?’ David then reflected to himself.

“Missed me as a friend?” He asked and the words hit her hard since she knew that it was more than that.

“No it’s more...well we were friends before we ever dated and this way that we aren’t even talking to each other it’s just so...I’ve just missed you!” She then said even though her heart was starting to get the truth. ‘It’s more then that, I’ve missed him as a boyfriend and...I shouldn’t have but I have and ...now it’s too late’

“So why didn’t you phone then? I mean it’s not like I was that far away” David said.

“Um...actually I was pretty pissed off with you for the way you dumped me, I mean hurt so...”

“Oh I’m sorry, you know I never meant to hurt you, you know it was just that with the papers and my divorce it wasn’t really a good time. Besides you hurt me too, I mean every time I see you with Freddie I think of what we could have had and I feel like an idiot!” David said.

“David you could never be an idiot, you are just jealous and you know that is actually kind of cute...I mean it’s normal to be, I was too” Sarah then confessed.

“Jealous, but of what? You were the one who ended up with the goody-goody boyfriend all I got was this really attention seeking British model” David said.

“There you see you said it she’s a model for crying out loud, how do you think that I could ever compete with that? I mean how do you think that seems to me, first you break it off with me because you don’t want to be in a relationship and in the next minute you are seen all over town with this...” Sarah said clearly still upset and hurt.

“Sarah, Cat was never a threat to you. I mean I don’t just go for looks, I like intelligent girls that I actually can have a conversation with and besides you are really prettier then her anyway so, if anyone should feel threatened it should be me. I mean you are with a...”

“David please I don’t really want to discuss him, I mean we are in a cabin alone together so why spoil it with talking about ex.’s? Besides if it can be of any consolation to you he never made me feel the way you do” Sarah admitted before she even thought it through.

She said ex’s? Does that mean that? No it can’t be I saw them together just earlier today...’ David thought to himself.

“What?” Sarah asked.

“You said ex...”

“I did?” Sarah asked. “Oops I meant...”

‘what did I mean? Do I want us to be through?’ The thought had come from out of the blue and since she wasn’t quite sure of how to interpret it she decided to just drop it. So therefore she went on. “Never mind my point is that why talk about things that hurt us? It’s New Year’s and we should celebrate!”

“You are right, let’s just drop it, I mean the past is in the past and... I make you feel what way?” David then asked.

“I thought....”

“I’m sorry I just need to know and then we can drop it” David said.

“Um you make me feel...safe...and yet excited. I mean whenever I’m around you...you set this thing off in me and it’s like the rest of the world just disappear, like there is no one else...you don’t know what I mean huh? Well just forget it I mean it’s not like it makes any difference to us now anyway!” Sarah then finished off the sentence as she realized that she was talking way too much and was far too close to crossing a line that shouldn’t be crossed.

“Yes it does” he then simply stated.

“Huh?” She said in disbelief and he then added.

“I just mean that I feel it too, so since we still feel the same way about each other I’d say that it does matter.”

“What way?” Sarah asked and hardly dared to breath as she awaited his reply even though she was pretty sure of what his answer was going to be.

‘He can’t possibly feel that way, I mean that I feel like my heart is about to break when I see him is my problem not his.’ Yet there was something in his chocolate brown eyes that made her wonder if he maybe actually did feel the same way about her as she did about him.

“Like my heart is about to break whenever I’m away from you, like I can’t think of anyone else but you and I know that I can’t have you anymore so it’s...”

“Torture?” She filled in and he nodded and then she said. “I’m sorry for hurting you, I mean I never meant to and...”

I love him, Oh gosh I still love him and no this can’t be he can’t feel that way about me so...’ Sarah thought as confusion was filling her every senses and she then decided to take the easy way out and just deny it. So she went on. “...really this gets us nowhere! So how about just ringing in the New Year together and forget about all our mistakes and move on?”

“Good idea but Sarah” he then said after throwing a glance on his watch. “...I think that you thought of it a bit too late!”

“What do you mean?” She asked.

“New Year’s over, it’s 1.20 am. It’s already January the first 2001, so really maybe we should just forget about the whole thing and...”

“Over? No it can’t be. I mean I never even got a New Year’s kiss and...” Sarah started off saying but then she could feel David giving her a peek on the lips and hear him say,

“Happy New Year Sarah! See now you’ve got it and that was easily...”

“Hey that wasn’t a kiss that was a lame excuse for one...no this is more the kiss I had in mind!” she said playfully as she leant forward and as her lips met his he could feel himself responding to it.

The kiss grew more passionate and she put her hands around his neck and he moved his hands down her back as he pulled her closer to him. Soon they were both lying down on the sofa together making out with a passion so huge that it overwhelmed both of them. They were playing with fire here but neither one of them wanted to care since they knew at that instant that their lips meet that the feelings they shared still was mutual.

‘This is unbelievable, I had forgot how good it is to be in his arms’ Sarah thought to herself as his lips started to trail down from her lips to her neck. ‘Her skin it’s so soft and I just love the way her perfume smells...no I love her’ he then corrected himself as his hands started to remove the stripes of her dress.

Their desire was building up and it was like her skin was burning from the touch of his hands as Sarah started to long to be as close to him as she could be. The small voice in her head that had told her that it was wrong for her to still want him had been silenced long ago and now all that existed was David and her and the way their feelings was heating up the room. Her legs went apart as she straddled him and David could feel how she started to remove his wet jacket and then untie his tie. Then she suddenly started to whisper something,

“David I...”and he immediately startled form the sound of her voice. ‘What if she doesn’t want it after all? I mean she’s not my girl anymore and we probably shouldn’t do this since it might hurt her in the morning. What if she’d regret it?’ David thought and then he knew what he had to do.

‘No matter how much I love her and want her I don’t want to do anything that can hurt her again and this might’ he then added and thereafter he reluctantly stopped. ‘No what are he doing? I thought that we...’ Sarah started of thinking.

“I’m sorry...” David mumbled as he tried to get up which was proving to be a bit harder then he thought since she was lying on top of him and she held him down, her eyes locking with his as they gazed lovingly at each other.

“For what?” Sarah asked. “I mean I kissed you and...”

“You don’t want to stop?” He asked as he started to get confused. ‘But if she don’t want to stop why did she say something?’ It was hurting him to say these words but he knew that he had to give her a choice since he didn’t want her if she wasn’t absolutely sure. So he went on.  “I mean I understand if you do, after all us being like this now it’s not really right and I can see...”

“David if this is wrong I don’t wanna be right and no I don’t wanna stop” Sarah said in a tender voice.

“Are you sure? I mean I love you too much to let you go again so if something happens here it got to be more than for tonight...”

He still loves me, I knew it, it was in his way of touching me, in his way of looking at me and...wait why thinking when we could be...’ So she then quickly went on.

“It will be, David I never stopped loving you, so don’t worry this is right because we can feel it in our hearts and...

“Sarah I love you” David said.

“I love you” she echoed in an emotional voice. “I love you so much and...promise that we’ll make it work this time?”

“I promise” he said and then he sealed that promise with a kiss that soon grew into an other one and yet another one and soon they were back to where they’d been before and this time none of them stopped.

So soon their wet clothes were started to be removed one by one until all that was remaining was them and they completely forget all about the world outside. Not noticing that the lights went out or that the blizzard was over them, not caring about anything but the way their bodies moved and how they made each other feel. It was like coming home after being a part for far too long and they once more had a hunger for life and a hope for the future...

THE END
