Chapter 1
Sarah sat there quietly in David's lap, thinking about how it was going to be
the last few days that they would be working together. She wanted to tell him
not to leave, not that it would really do any good. Besides it was a great
opportunity for him, he was getting his own show, and she wasn't going to stand
in his way. Still that didn't mean that she wasn't going to miss him, he was her
best friend she never enjoyed working with anyone as much as she did with him.
And now they were down to one of their last scenes and she couldn't help the
sadness that crept into her heart. She loved him, deep down she knew she did,
but sometimes love isn't enough especially when a marriage is involved.
He was supposed to be happy, he was getting his own show a few more scenes on
Buffy and then that was it, after that he'd be on his own. Sure he knew it was a
great move for his career, but it tore him apart to think that he would be
leaving her, when he loved her so much. No that was wrong he wasn't supposed to
have those feelings, he was married, he'd tell himself that all the time. It's
funny how none of it seemed to matter when he took one look at her. And now she
was sitting in his lap, playing with his sleeve and all he could do was tighten
his grip on her, not wanting to ever let her go.
They sat there and joked and made one of their last scenes a fun experience,
anything to take their minds of the sorrow they felt. It's not like they would
never work together again, the producers had mentioned some ideas for crossovers
but it wouldn't be the same, they wouldn't be around each other everyday, but it
was something they would have to get used to.
After a long day of shooting their scenes they made their way to their cars.
David walked her to her car and wished her a goodnight. As he turned to leave he
stopped and spun back around.
"Sarah" he said walking back towards her. She looked up as she started her car.
"Yeah."
"Are you hungry?"
She smiled, she wasn't but she wanted more than anything to spend whatever time
they could together. "Yeah." she said
He smiled as he climbed into her car, and they went out to get a bite to eat.
They spent most of their time out talking rather than eating. Neither was really
interested in the food, rather the company. It felt so natural to David being
with her, he had never felt like he could be himself around any other than
Sarah, and she felt much the same. They talked about the shows and just about
the usual stuff two best friends would talk about. Everything was going well
until his cell rang. It was his wife wondering where he was, and why he wasn't
home yet. He told her he was out with some friends and would be home later.
After he ended the call the mood of the evening seemed to have changed, reality
slammed down in front of them, Sarah knew nothing could ever happen between
them.
They didn't talk much on the drive back to get David's car. All Sarah could
think about was the fact that her heart was beating so fast it was about to jump
out of her chest, just from being so close to him. Would he always have this
effect on her? It didn't matter she had to stop thinking about it, nothing could
ever happen between them, EVER!
David sat there in complete silence, his palms sweating like a fifteen year old
school boy, while looking at her through the corner of his eye. 'She's so
beautiful' he thought to himself. Married or not whenever he was around her he
just couldn't help himself. He wanted her so badly, but did she feel the same,
could he have a chance with her? He needed to know, he needed to find out.
When she pulled up next to his car she cut the engine, and turned to face him.
"Thanks for dinner, it was nic-"
She didn't even get to finish her sentence before his lips captured hers in
kiss. Pushing him away she was shocked. "What are you doing?"
"I don't know." he replied in a husky voice, before seizing her lips again with
his own. This time she responded, giving into his kiss. Their tongues seeking
out each other. Their hands everywhere, aching to feel the other in their arms.
Chapter 2
"Oh God." She said as she pulled away from him.
"Oh God." he replied thinking that she meant the kiss; she did just not in the
way he was thinking.
"What are you... Oh God." she said as she clutched at the steering wheel and
tried to put some distance between them, it was proving to be difficult in the
car.
"Sarah, I'm sorry. I just… I've wanted to do that for so long." He said
immediately regretting it. How could he do this to her, how could he put her in
this position?
"You’re married." Was her only reply.
"I know, it's just sometimes I think that maybe-"
"Don't finish that." She begged. She couldn't be that girl, the one to break up
a marriage. No that wasn't her, no matter how badly she wanted him.
"I'm sorry I can't help the way I feel." he pleaded
"Yes you can and you will, this can't... we can't... ever."
"Sarah please."
"Goodnight David." she said as she turned the keys in the ignition. Without a
word he got out of the car, and then leaned in through the opened window to look
at her.
"Goodnight."
She glanced up at him quickly, her heart nearly breaking at the sight of him.
She wanted nothing more than to tell him how she felt about him, and what that
kiss meant to her. But she knew it was wrong, she turned to face the road as
David stepped back. She took of leaving him behind staring after her. As she
checked the review mirror and found his figure standing there just watching, her
eyes welled with tears 'why did he have to be married?'
**********
The next day on the set things were awkward, very awkward. She couldn't even
look at him without thinking of last night and that kiss...Oh God that kiss.
Sneaking glances at her every minute, David felt so guilty for what he had done,
not to his wife so much, more towards Sarah. Maybe he was wrong maybe she didn't
feel the same, no she definitely kissed him back. A smile tugged at his lips at
the thought of their shared kiss last night. But it wasn't right; he'd give
anything to turn back time, and... oh who was he kidding he'd do the same thing
all over again. The truth is he would give just about anything to kiss her again
without everyone staring, and someone yelling cut, when stopping was last thing
on his mind.
And now that his time on Buffy was coming to an end how was he going to show
her, how was he going to prove his feelings towards her? Only days to go and
that would be it, no more seeing her smiling face every morning. No more goofing
off on the set, no more nothing, he probably wouldn't even see her again.
She always wanted something to happen between them she'd had feelings for him
for so long now. But it was just the fantasy of it, she never wanted any kind of
relationship with him, for God's sake he was married. Yeah right, she wanted
nothing more than to be with him. She wanted it pretty much from their first
meeting, her previous relationships only proof to that. Every time she got
involved with a guy, without even knowing it she'd start comparing him to David.
No one made her smile without even doing anything but walking into a room. No
one made her laugh at the silliest things for hours on end. And no one could
ever be the friend he had been to her over the last three years. She didn't want
to lose that friendship, but then again she didn't want to throw away the only
chance she may have at something more, 'damn if only he wasn't married.'
As the director called for them to take their places, Sarah went over to where
he was standing. He looked so good, all in black and that shirt fitting to his
chest so well, 'control yourself girl' she thought as she looked up at him, then
looked back down when she noticed his stare.
He couldn't take his eyes off her, God she looked good in leather and her hair,
oh he loved her hair, but most of all it was always her eyes that drew him in.
He picked her up in his arms, ready and waiting for the director to call action.
When the call came he ran down the hospital halls with her in his arms. For a
moment he lost himself completely, looking at her lying there, her eyes closed.
When he laid her down on the bed he struggled to say anything at all, he was
fighting the desire to lie with her and hold her, and kiss her, and "Cut" came
the call from the director, interrupting his thoughts.
"Sorry." David said, "I was at a loss for words"
Sarah blushed at his comment. 'Oh no did I just say that out loud.' Looking at
her face he realized he had, she was smiling at him and her face was red. As
embarrassed as he felt he couldn't help but smile back. This was going to be a
long and hard day.
**********
Sitting in her trailer, she read over the script preparing herself for her next
scene. She was interrupted by a knock at the door.
"Yeah, I'm coming." She yelled thinking it was her cue to be back on set.
"Sarah."
Dropping her script and coming to her feet, she realized who it was calling her
name.
"David?"
"Yeah it's me, can I come in." he said through the door.
"Ah now's not really a good time." She said as she checked herself in the mirror
and adjusted her clothing.
"Please, I need to talk to you."
"Okay." she replied as she opened the door.
Climbing the steps into her trailer and closing the door behind him, he stood
there trying to say whatever it was he needed to.
"Ah....' he began "Well what I wanted... ummm..." She just stared at him, not
knowing what to say herself. "Sarah... look I... can I kiss you?" he finally
blurted out.
"Yes." she replied in an instant.
With two quick strides he stood in front of her and captured her in his arms.
Wrapping her arms around his neck she kissed him like she had always wanted to,
kissed him like the scripts for their characters had never asked. She kissed him
even though she knew she shouldn't, and he kissed her back devouring her mouth
in a way that had been denied for so long.
Chapter 3
They had been kissing for at least ten minutes, David pulling her tightly
against him. He didn't want to let go of her, and when she tried to pull away he
cupped her head with his hand, tangling his fingers in her hair, not letting her
resist. Eventually they broke apart for air, that was when she let go of him and
walked to the other side of the trailer. He walked up behind her and wrapped his
arms around her waist, then started planting kisses on her neck and shoulder.
"Okay now we really need to talk" she said as her hands came to rest on his,
prying them apart she slipped out of his arms, and walked over to the couch to
sit down.
Following her again he sat down beside her. "I know." he said dreading the
moment, what was he going to say, how would they be able to be together? They
would find a way, nothing was impossible when it came to the one you loved.
"I don't know what this is between us, all I now is that I've dreamt of it for
so long, and to finally have a chance it's something I don't want to let slip
away. On the other hand I don't see how this could work."
In that moment David didn't think he could have been happier, she really did
feel the same way he did, and she'd had these feelings for a while, just like
he. He had fallen under her spell the day he had set eyes on her, and then every
time after that when he had guest starred on the show, but at the time he was
involved, with his now wife. The reason he never made a move was not only his
wife, but he wasn't sure he was going to be around after they shot the first
season of Buffy, and she'd be so busy with work. Really was there any reason to
hurt Ingrid over what he thought was nothing. Clearly now he should have, now
things were going to be a lot more painful. He remembered that not long after he
and Ingrid had married he'd gotten the call to be a regular on the show, and all
he could think in that moment was that he was going to see Sarah again. He
dismissed the feelings though, putting it down to simply enjoying her
friendship. If only he had any idea that those feelings he’d dismissed for her
were mutual, if only he knew before the date of his wedding maybe he wouldn't
have gotten married. But it was too late for that now, two years to late. The
important thing now was that he had a chance to finally be happy, to be with the
woman he truly loved and she wanted the same thing, but she did have a point,
how was this going to work?
"So where do we go from here?" he asked, returning his attention to their
conversation.
"I don't know. I can't ask you to leave your wife for me David, and I can't be
with someone who is married."
"I understand." he replied looking down at his hands, trying not to show his
pain. "Would it help if I told you that I wanted to be with you, that I love
you." he said the last part in almost a whisper.
Sarah was shocked; she didn't know what to say to that. But she couldn't just
sit there doing nothing, finally she spoke up.
"No that wouldn't hel-... You love me?" she said her features softening at his
declaration.
He smiled at her "Yeah, I fight it but its there, it’s always been there." By
the look on her face he can tell she is a little confused "I’m not asking you to
feel the same I just-"
"I love you too David, so much." was her reply.
David tried to smile but couldn't, as her lips locked on his in a kiss. It was
soft and slow and it brought tears to her eyes, she was really sitting there
kissing him, no cameras, no lights, just the two of them. That was until they
were interrupted.
Without even knocking Alyson entered the trailer, about to tell Sarah that they
were due back on set. She wasn't really surprised to see the couple kissing,
they rehearsed in their trailers often, but then she realized they didn't
exactly have a kissing scene to be rehearsing.
"Sorry" she said when she realized she had just walked in on them, retreating
the way she came she closed the door behind her.
"I think we just got caught out." smiled Sarah, as she sat back on the couch.
"Yeah I think we did." he smiled back, not caring at all that Alyson had seen
them.
"Sarah." Alyson called from outside the trailer.
"Yeah Aly, I'll just be a minute." She turned to face David "Look we have to get
back on set, but we really need to have a talk about this."
"We do, so..."
"Well I'll meet you in your trailer after we're done for the day."
"Okay." he smiled at her before leaning in to press a quick kiss against her
lips.
When they opened the door, he descended the steps with her close behind. He
couldn't look at Aly who was still standing there waiting for them, but he
didn't want to look as though he had done something wrong, so he gave her a warm
smile.
Without a word she smiled back at David, before grabbing Sarah by the arm and
heading back up the steps and into her friend’s trailer. After closing the door
she turned to face her blonde friend.
"Okay now spill."
Chapter 4
"What?" questioned Sarah playing innocent.
"You know what." Said Alyson, trying to hide the smile tugging at the corner of
her mouth.
"I have no idea, but anyway I think we better get moving, we have a show to
make." she said as she headed towards the door.
Stepping in front of her Alyson asked "Sarah, what was that that I walked in on?
Tell me."
"Oh you mean me and David; we were just going over a few scenes."
"Oh really, I didn't realize you had a kissing scene to go over." she said with
a smirk on her face
Sarah couldn't help but smile; even though she was clearly busted she didn't
seem to care. Did that make her a bad person, not caring that she had been
caught kissing another woman’s husband? All she could think about was how being
with David and finally coming clean about the way she felt to him was affecting
her, when the number one thing here was his wife. She was going to be that girl,
the one she never wanted to be. She was going to break up a marriage; no matter
how hard she tried she couldn't get it out of her mind. Was what she felt for
David really worth it? No time to think about it now, she had to get moving and
she still had to give Aly an answer.
"Aly it's a long and complicated story, that I don't have the ending to, so can
we talk about this another time, please?"
Aly slumped her shoulders in defeat, so she wasn't about to tell her now, that's
okay she'd get it out of her eventually. "Sure... we should get going anyway."
Sarah smiled grateful that they had dropped the subject, she really wasn't ready
to talk about her relationship with David, if you could even call it that, but
when she was she knew that her friend would be all ears. Besides Aly was the
only other who had any idea about the way she felt about him over the years, it
was only natural that she would want to know if something was happening between
them.
**********
On the library set the new found lovers couldn't stop sneaking glances and
smiling at each other, this was one of their last scenes together; they only had
one more to shoot after today. But this time around it didn't seem to bother
them as much as yesterday. Maybe that was due to the fact that before they seen
it at as something coming to an end, but now with everything that had happened
in the last twenty four hours, it was like a whole new beginning. Sure they had
a lot yet to talk about, and a lot of issues to work through, but right now they
were just enjoying being around each other.
Alyson just sat there in between takes staring at them; they were so perfect
together she just couldn't understand why it had taken them so long. When the
rest were no longer needed on the set, and it was time to shoot a B/A scene, Aly
winked at Sarah before following Nicky out. Nicky noticing it asked "What was
that all about?"
"What?" She asked, wanting to hit herself for being so obvious.
"That little exchange between you and Sarah."
"I have no idea what your talking about." she tried to lie.
"Uhuh, so why don't I believe you?"
Alyson only smiled back at him, before heading to her trailer. As she walked
away leaving Nicky standing there trying to figure it out, it dawned on him.
"Women, I'll never understand them."
**********
After shooting an emotional scene David and Sarah headed back towards his
trailer. Once they were out of view, David took her hand in his as they walked.
They didn't really say anything, just smiled at each other as they walked before
finally coming to his trailer. Opening the door for her, Sarah let go of his
hand to go inside, and instantly came to a stop once she had a view of the
couch. David coming up behind, bumped into her, smiling as he apologized, his
smile quickly disappeared once he seen what Sarah's attention was focused on.
Sitting on the couch in his trailer was his wife in tears.
Chapter 5
"Ingrid?" he said shocked to see his wife sitting in his trailer crying. "What's
wrong?"
She sits back looking up for the first time since she heard the door open. When
she sees Sarah her expression changes and she instantly becomes annoyed that the
blonde is in her husband’s trailer. Looking back over at David as he comes to
sit next her on the couch she asks
"What is she doing in here?"
David is taken aback by the hostility towards his co star form his wife, he knew
that Ingrid had issues when it came to Sarah, but to be so rude as to just blurt
it out he couldn't believe it.
"Ingrid, that's wasn't necess-."
"No David its fine." Interrupted an upset Sarah, although she was doing a good
job at hiding it. "We can go over those scenes in the morning." She said as she
turned around taking the steps to exit his trailer.
"Sarah wait." he said as he stood to try and stop her or explain, or at least do
something.
When he got to the door she was already a fair distance away, he wanted nothing
more than to run after her, and reassure her that she was the one he wanted, and
that nothing could change that. He wanted to tell her that he was going to tell
his wife, just not right now. But he knew he couldn’t leave, had to be there for
Ingrid. It was the least he could do after the way he was about to hurt her.
Stepping back inside and closing the door behind him, he forgot the fact that
she was still crying for a second.
"I wouldn't hurt to be nice, you know."
"What?" she said shocked that he was defending Sarah when she was clearly upset.
"Sarah, she hasn't done anything wrong." as soon as he said it he realized that
he was wrong, she had done something wrong or at least that's how Ingrid would
see it, she had kissed him back and told him that she loved him. As much as he
wanted to smile at the thought of Sarah loving him, he couldn't it was wrong.
‘My wife is here in my trailer upset and all I can think about is another woman,
what a husband.’ David eventually snapped out of his thoughts as he heard her
speak.
"No she just always seems to be around you." she said as more tears spilled free
Sitting back down next to her and putting his arm around her back to comfort
her, he tried to reassure her. He knew he couldn't tell Ingrid that he was in
love with someone else, he knew that something bad had happened and that he
needed to be there for her.
"Honey look, we work together that's all." he lied feeling so guilty that things
had come to this. "Why don’t' you tell me what's got you so upset." he said as
he turned her face towards him.
Sniffling and wiping at her tears she stood to put some distance between them,
she had no idea of how she was going to tell him, but she had to try.
"David I... ummmm... I'm pregnant."
"What?" he said jumping to his feet
"I'm pregnant, or at least I think I am." she said bursting into tears again.
Oh god this changed everything, she was pregnant, his wife was pregnant; he was
going to be a dad. He couldn't believe it, they had created a life and he was
going to be a father. He suddenly realised that he had wanted to tell her that
he had found someone else, that he was in love with someone else. How could he
do that now, his wife was carrying his child, he couldn't just turn his back on
her, or the baby for that matter. So this meant that any chance he had with
Sarah was gone, that his chance to feel true love couldn't be reached, he had to
let her go. That’s if he even really had her in the first place, yeah they had
kissed and confessed their love but where were things headed after that, would
they have really have had a future? It seemed that that was something he would
never know, as he was going to be a father and he had to put the child before
what he wanted. Besides he wanted this child and its not like he didn't love
Ingrid, he'd married her for god's sake. How was he going to tell Sarah that
what had happened between them was a mistake, that they could never be. David
was snapped out of his thoughts when he heard Ingrid ask.
"What are we going to do?" she asked sobbing.
"Where going to have a baby." he smiled.
Ingrid didn't think that he would want the child, she was actually hoping on it,
as she just couldn't envision herself as a mother. And now seeing the smile on
his face it looked as though he was happy, 'So what, he wants this baby? Well
it's not up to him.' she thought.
"Wrong David I'm going to have a baby." she spat.
David was confused, what was that supposed to mean? That she didn't think he was
going to be there for her, or was it that the baby wasn't his? No of course it
was, Ingrid would never have been unfaithful, no he was the one who was
unfaithful. As much as he felt guilty for what he had done, he didn't regret it,
he loved Sarah so much that every moment they had shared together in each others
arms was a miracle, and one he would always remember. He knew that he had to put
what had happened with her behind him and focus on his wife. So what was his
wife trying to say? Suddenly it dawned on him.
"You don't want this child."
Looking up at him, her eyes still filled with tears she whispered "No."
"So what, you want to terminate it."
She didn't reply, she just looked away from him. He couldn't believe it he had
wanted kids for as long as he could remember and now, he was being denied one
when it already existed. It was growing inside her, and she wasn't going to give
him the chance to love it like he deserved.
"There's no way you are taking this away from me." he spat
"It's my body; it's up to me what I do with it."
If David thought he was angry before it was nothing compared to the rage that
was flowing through his veins now, 'How dare she' he thought.
"Wrong Ingrid, it's not just up to you. That's OUR baby you’re carrying, not
just yours."
"But I'm carrying it; it's growing in my body."
"And that right there doesn't make you think how amazing it all is, it doesn’t
make you think that you have given the gift of life to something so innocent,
you can't just take it away."
"David I don't want to be a mother, I don't want to have children, not now not
ever."
When she said that it felt like she had stuck a knife in his heart, moments ago
he was thinking of the best way to eventually tell her that he wanted to be with
Sarah no matter how guilty he felt, and now he was trying to save the life of an
innocent from his own wife. How could anyone not want a child, it's not like
they were too young or couldn't afford to raise one. They were even married damn
it, it went against everything he believed to even think of getting rid of this
child. He had to find a way to change her mind.
"I think you just need time, to let it sink in."
"No David you don't get it, I don't need time, I need to not be pregnant."
"Damn it Ingrid, could you just think for one second what it is that you’re
saying. You want to kill something, don't you see how bad that is, how wrong it
is." Finally it struck him there might just be a way to convince her, hopefully
she was too far into her pregnancy that and abortion would be out of the
question.
"How far along are you anyway?" He asked as he lowered his voice
"I don't know, I haven't seen a doctor yet."
"So you don't even know if you are pregnant?" David asked a little disappointed.
"Oh no I definitely am, I did a home pregnancy test and it was positive, so I
did another one and that was positive too. That and I have been really sick
lately, so I rang my doctor I have an appointment in four days to find out how
far along I am."
"Well we wrap up shooting in two days, I can come with you." he said as he drew
her into his arms.
"Okay." she said as she sobbed against his chest
Four days until he found out if he was going to be a father or not, four days of
hoping that she was at least three months pregnant, four days in which to tell
Sarah, and walk away from the only woman who could ever make him feel complete.
**********
Sarah had every intention of going to her trailer and waiting for David, until
she realized how stupid the idea was. ‘He is in his trailer with his wife,
comforting her.’ Her heart started breaking at the idea, and she couldn’t help
but feel guilty, she was jealous hat he was being there for his wife, when she
needed him.
‘Of course his wife is going to come first, she always will. They have years
together and what do we have, a few kisses over the last day. Like that would
ever be enough to make David re-think his vows.’ All she knew was that she loved
him, and she wanted to be with him, and although she thought about it before,
now more than ever she understood that what they had done, giving into their
feelings they way they had, was wrong. If only she knew that David loved her
more, maybe in the end it was better that she didn’t
Grabbing her stuff out of her trailer she headed towards her car. On the drive
home she realized that she had to let him go, even though her heart was telling
her otherwise. Sometimes no matter how much you love someone it’s just not meant
to be.
Chapter 6
That night when he took Ingrid home all he could think of as he lay next to her
was the child growing inside her, and the fact that she didn't want it. It hurt
so much that there was a good chance that he was going to be a father and she
wanted to take it away from him. Then his thoughts drifted to Sarah, he knew
that if it were her carrying his child that she wouldn't even think of getting
rid of it. Sarah loved children as much as he; she'd shown it time and time
again when his sister would bring her children to the Buffy set. It hurt more
than he thought possible that she was the one woman that wanted everything he
did, and yet he couldn't have her.
**********
As Sarah tried to fall asleep all she could think about was David and how happy
she was only moments before reaching his trailer. She knew she would never love
another like she did him, but there was nothing she could do about it, she
always knew he was married, but seeing his wife in his trailer just reinforced
it, and made it so much more painful. She couldn't come between them even if
David wanted it himself, she just couldn't do it.
**********
The next day on set Sarah didn't have any scenes with David and didn't get a
chance to see him, she thought that maybe he was avoiding her, because he had
regretted what they had done. She kept asking Aly if she had seen him yet, and
this made Aly want to know what was going on even more so than before.
When she wasn't needed on set she locked herself in her trailer and tried not to
let herself cry, 'Oh God why do I feel like this? It’s feels like I've just
ended a serious relationship, I guess it's because that's something we will
never get to have. Maybe if I had never of kissed him, then I wouldn't be
feeling this way. No I'd be worse, because then I would never have known what it
would be like to kiss someone I truly loved.' Sarah was startled out of her
thoughts when she heard a knock at her door.
"David." she whispered to herself, and although she was sad, a smile crossed her
face.
When she opened the door to her trailer she was a little disappointed to see Aly
standing there. Aly had noticed that something was wrong with her friend all
day; she knew it had something to do with David, considering she asked about him
the whole time she’d been there that day.
"Sarah are you okay?" she asked still standing outside.
"No." she said as she burst out in tears.
Aly quickly climbed the steps to her trailer, and threw her arms around her
friend as she sobbed against her. After a while Sarah eventually pulled away and
wiped at her tears with shaky hands, Aly turned around and locked the door then
directed Sarah to sit on the couch.
**********
David stood there for a while contemplating what to do 'Should I just knock on
her door, and tell her? But I don't want to, I want to be with her, but I can't,
no everything’s changed now.' He was about to walk over towards Sarah's trailer
when he saw Aly approaching it from another direction.
He watched as the red head knocked on the door and stood outside as Sarah spoke
to her, he tried to get a glimpse of the blonde beauty but couldn't, eventually
Aly went inside and closed the door behind her. David knew he had to talk to
her; he had to explain about last night.
**********
"What happened?" she asked her blonde friend as she stroked her hair.
"Oh Aly how did my life get so messed up?" she said before burying her head in
her hands as she continued crying.
"What do you mean?" she asked, knowing it might make her feel better if she
talked to someone about it.
"David." she said then reached for some tissues.
"What did he do?" she asked rubbing her friends back
"He told me he loved me." she said before bursting into tears again.
"Okay I can see how that might upset you." said Aly a little confused.
"You don't understand he's married, and we kissed, more than once, and I told
him I loved him too, and HE'S MARRIED.” she said as she tried to calm herself.
"Well he's obviously not happily married."
"What do you mean?" Asked Sarah as she dabbed the tissue just under her eyes
wiping away her tears.
Just then there was a knock at the door, both girls looked at it without moving.
"Sarah are you in there? It's me David... I need to talk to you."
Sarah sat there shaking her head and mouthing no to Aly.
"Ahhh David." the red head began "now's not a good time, can you come back
later."
He didn't want to leave, but what else could he do aside from breaking in the
door. "Okay." he replied as he slowly walked away 'she doesn't want to talk to
me, who could blame her with what I'm about to tell her.'
"Thank you." Sarah whispered to her friend
"It's okay, but you do realize that you have to talk to him sooner or later
right?"
"Yeah I know, just not when I'm all splotchy." She said fixing her hair and
wiping more tears away from her eyes. "So what did you mean about not happily
married?"
"Well, if he said that he loved you and kissed you, than don't you think that
maybe he wants to be with you." Aly said trying to reassure her friend.
"Aly I can't be with someone who's married."
"No but is he staying married?"
"I don't know, we were supposed to talk about it last night but... Ingrid."
"What did she say?" asked the red head knowing how David's wife always acted
towards Sarah.
"Oh nothing, but seeing her just made it more real, if that makes sense."
"Sarah I don't know what to say except... GROW UP."
Sarah stopped sniffling and looked at her friend in disbelief. "What?" she said
in a shaky voice.
"You heard me grow up, you have been in love with him for how long now, and
you've seen first hand the way his wife treats him. And now you finally find out
that the guys in love with you too, which might I just add was so obvious, and
you sit here crying about it. David's not happy with her, and you see it too,
this is your chance and you just seem content to sit here crying about it."
Sarah tried to soak in everything Aly had just said to her "So what do I do?"
"What do you think? Fight for him, isn't he worth it?"
"Oh my God..."
"What?" questioned Aly
"You're right." Sarah said as she smiled for the first time since she had seen
him last night.
**********
Soon after Sarah and Aly had had their talk, they were called to board the bus
to go on location. She walked to the bus doors with her head down and bumped
into David who was standing there waiting to get on.
"Sarah." he couldn't help but smile when he seen her, but that smile soon faded
when he remembered what he had to do.
"David, hey." she smiled back, she loved the way he said her name.
They stood there just starting at each other for what felt like forever to
everyone else, yet not long enough to them.
"You guy's getting on the bus, or just standing there?" asked Nicky who was
already seated on the bus along with everyone else, waiting for the two to board
so they could leave. David smiled at her and said.
"You first." as he gestured for her to go ahead of him.
Her only reply was a smile. He silently hoped that he could sit next to her, he
didn't want to tell her on a bus of all places, yet he just wanted to be near
her as much as possible these last days.
Sarah sat next to Charisma and the two started talking instantly, about nothing
in particular. As much as David got along with Nicky he was disappointed to be
sitting anywhere that wasn't near Sarah.
"What's up?" Nicky asked as he noticed the look on David's face.
"Nothing." replied David not too convincingly.
"I'm not buying it."
David didn't say anything; he just sat there deep in thoughts about Sarah and
his wife, 'Why does everything have to be so hard.'
"I know what it is." said Nicky
"Huh." David said coming back to reality.
"Your gonna miss me aren't ya? It's understandable I'm pretty missable."
David laughed, "Yeah that's it."
**********
They had been shooting at the school all night and David had one scene left to
do. Joss called for a break but warned everyone not to go far, especially Sarah
and David. He spotted her talking to Charisma, and knew that this was the only
chance he was going to get to talk to her. He approached the two girls quietly,
and actually startled Sarah when he said her name.
"Sarah."
She jumped then turned to face him. "Hey." she said looking up at him.
"Can we talk… privately." he added as he looked at Charisma then back at Sarah.
"Yeah sure, wanna take a walk?" She asked, she was trying to think of what she
was going to say to him, should she just tell him straight out that she was
going to fight for him?
"Yeah."
"Okay." she said as she followed his lead and walked around the school grounds
and stopped just behind one of the large buildings, where they couldn't be seen
or heard.
"I'm sorry about last night, with Ingrid." he said as he took her hand in his.
"It's okay, I mean I understand she's your wife." she said as she slipped her
hand out of his, a little uncomfortable on the topic of his wife, this made her
re-think her decision. Or at least she thought she shouldn’t touch him while he
was still married, that was if he even wanted to leave his wife.
"Still what she said, she was out of line." He said disappointed that her hand
was no longer in his.
"Was she?"
"I guess not but-"
"David don't worry about it, she's your wife, I'm not... I'm well, nothing."
"No Sarah, your not you’re... you're everything." He whispered
"David please don't say things like that to me, this can't ever be anything, so
don't." ‘This is where you tell me that I’m wrong and it can’ she thought.
"I'm sorry; I just… I need to tell you something."
"What?" she said looking into his eyes.
“That I wish thing's were different.” Picking up her hand again and this time
not letting her pull it away “Sarah I love you so much, and I wish more than
anything that I could be with you, and make love to you. That's what I was going
to tell you last night, that I wanted to give us a chance and see where it goes.
That I wanted to be with you and not Ingrid.”
Sarah was speechless and tears started to well in her eyes 'Is he really saying
this to me? Wait did he say he was going to? So what stopped him?'
“But last night, when Ingrid was in my trailer crying, well she came to the set
because she had some news.” He paused not knowing how to tell her. “She's
pregnant, I'm going to be a dad.” he smiled.
If Sarah thought that she had ever felt the pain of a broken heart before she
was wrong, no this was what it felt like. She pushed her tears back and her eyes
turned cold.
"Wow David, way to rub it in. First you tell me you love me and that you want to
be with me, and then you tell me your wife’s pregnant. Sorry if I'm not
overjoyed by the news, it's kind of hard to be when my heart is breaking." she
said as her tears surged forward and spilled down her cheeks.
"Sarah I'm sorry, but what do you want me to do." he pleaded.
"Well don't tell me you love me, and just... stay away from me." She spat and
started walking away.
"Sarah." he yelled as he chased after her. "I'm sorry."
"Me too David."
He spun her around to face him, then reached out and cupped her cheek with his
palm "Believe me if there was another way, I'd take it, but I can't walk away
from this baby, I just can't."
Sarah realized he was right, he was only trying to do the right thing, she had
to admire that about him, no matter how much it hurt "I understand." she said as
more tears spilled free.
They stood like that for a while, not saying anything; David with his hand still
cupping her cheek ran the pad of his thumb across her lips.
"I don't want to walk away from you." he whispered.
"And I don't want you to." she replied as she looked back up at him, his hand
now sliding up her jaw, and into her hair.
Instantly his lips locked with hers, and he pulled her body close to his. She
parted her lips and slid her tongue into his mouth trying to memorize the taste
and feel of him, so she could remember it forever. He kissed her like it was the
last time he'd ever kiss someone he loved again, massaging her tongue with his
own, tangling his fingers in her hair, neither pulled apart for air until they
heard someone near.
"Has anyone seen Sarah and David." one of the assistants was yelling.
Reluctantly letting go of him she noticed the tears welling in his eyes and
couldn't help but lean forward and kiss him quickly again, even if it meant
getting caught. When they heard the footsteps getting closer they straightened
up and wiped at their eyes before emerging.
"There you guys are, their just about ready for you on set, so I suggest you get
moving." he said smiling at the pair.
**********
Shooting their final scene proved to be more difficult than first thought, Sarah
just couldn't get it out of her head that this was it, it was over. She cried
every time they shot the scene. Now trying just about anything to pull herself
together she waited for the call.
"Action."
Turning around and seeing him standing there, smoke surrounding him, she held
back on her tears and just looked at him. ‘This is the last time I get to see
him, this is it, don't cry, oh god don't cry.'
David stood there looking at her not wanting to turn away, the whole time he
wasn't even in character, all he could think was that he was leaving her. 'I
love you Sarah.' he thought to himself just before he turned and walked away.
'Oh god, he's really leaving.' She said as she did nothing but watch his
retreating form.
"And Cut, you guys that was great."
**********
After finishing up on a few other scenes they all boarded the bus. On the drive
back both Sarah and David just sat there, not saying anything, as everyone
chatted around them.
After a long night shooting the last scenes for the season, Sarah climbed into
her bed and drifted off to sleep, her tears soaking her pillow.
David couldn't bring himself to lay next to Ingrid that night, not only because
of how she felt about their unborn child, but because he had another on his
mind. He decided some TV would do him good, settling back on the lounge, he
flicked through the channels and thought of her, he imagined what life with her
would have been like, something he'd pictured only the other day so clearly in
his mind, but now the image was lost.
Chapter 7
He'd seen Sarah once more the next day on set wrapping up the season, and saying
goodbye to everyone, yet he never really got to say goodbye to her. Something he
deeply regretted. He wanted so many times to pull her aside and tell her he was
wrong, that he had made a mistake and that he wanted to be with her, regardless
of the baby, but he knew it was something he just couldn’t do.
Tomorrow was the day he was going to find out how far along his wife was in her
pregnancy, he hadn't been able to get the thought out of his head. Not that he
was going to be a father, but rather the way his wife felt about it, that's what
made him second guess things.
He thought that if his wife were over three months pregnant than she wouldn't be
able to do anything but have the child, yet say she did, was it really for the
best, him staying with her? Would it really be a good thing for the child to be
raised by two parents that really just weren't meant to be together?
It's not that he didn’t love his wife, he did, just not the way he used to, or
was that just because of his feelings for Sarah. Regardless tomorrow was a big
day for the both of them, but as much as it clouded his mind, Sarah was still in
his thoughts.
*********
The next day just seemed to drag on; he counted down the hours till his wife’s
appointment at two that afternoon and when it was finally time to go, the drive
over there was horrific. Traffic was unbelievable and at one point he thought
they were going to miss the appointment all together. But they made it and with
five minutes to spare. Waiting anxiously and flipping through out of date
magazines David was nervous about seeing the doctor
When the doctor finally called Ingrid, he stood throwing a magazine back on the
table and followed his wife into the room. The doctor spoke to Ingrid about her
two previous home pregnancy tests and decided that even though both had shown up
as positive, he would still prefer to do a blood test, just to do things
properly.
After taking the test they waited while the doctor had a look at the results
before they would have an ultrasound to check the baby’s heartbeat and to see
how far along the pregnancy was. David was so nervous he hoped she was past the
12 week mark, he was also a little excited too, he was going to see his baby.
"Okay well it looks like I have your results, and your not pregnant." said the
doctor sitting back down behind his desk.
"What?" David and Ingrid exclaimed at the same time.
"But I took two home pregnancy tests, and the line... it was there." She said in
disbelief.
"Yes I understand that, but your blood is telling a different story."
"What do you mean?" asked David.
"Well what your wife found with her home tests was two false positives. It's
when the test says you're pregnant but you're not, they are very rare. But I
have come across them before." He looked back over at Ingrid "Ingrid on the
tests was the line faint or dark."
"Faint." she answered still trying to understand everything, the doctor had just
said.
"And what time of day did you take the test?"
"The first about 4pm, and the second about 7pm."
"Why? Asked David.
"Well when taking a urine test you should do so in the morning, that way it is
most concentrated and will provide a better reading."
"So I'm definitely not pregnant?"
"No, I'm sorry."
A smile crept on Ingrid's face, she was glad she wasn't pregnant; she wasn't
ready for a baby she doubted she ever would be. David noticed the smile on her
face, and quickly got up and stormed out of the Doctors office. How could she be
happy about this, it was something he always wanted and even if she had of been
pregnant he probably wouldn't have gotten to keep the baby, thanks to her being
so stubborn.
Running after him she stopped him outside "David wait, where are you going?"
"Here take the keys, drive yourself home, I need to get some air." he snapped
"But how will you get ho-"
"Just go." he yelled.
And she did, she walked of in a huff, and David did so to but in the other
direction. He couldn't be near her right now, he was just so mad. He went to the
first bar he came across and ordered himself a drink. He had hoped that his wife
was far enough in her pregnancy not to be able to do anything but have the
child, but he had never thought that she wasn't pregnant at all.
He sat there for an hour nursing his drink in one of the booths. And finally it
dawned on him "Sarah." he whispered, if Ingrid wasn't pregnant then there was no
reason he couldn't be with her. He had to talk to her that he knew for sure.
Pulling out his cell he dialled her number, it only rang once before David hung
up. 'No I have to see her, I'll go over there.’ he thought as he left the bar
and hailed a cab.
On his way over to her house, for the first time that day he smiled. ‘Maybe it
was a good thing Ingrid wasn't pregnant after all, It's not right to bring a
child into the world when its parents shouldn't be together.’ He thought.
That was something else he still had to take care of, he had to tell his wife
that he didn't want to be with her anymore, that he wanted someone else. He knew
he should have spoken to Ingrid before Sarah, but he just couldn't help it, he
missed Sarah already and he needed to see her so badly.
As the cab pulled up out the front of Sarah’s home he took a deep breath before
getting out, this was it, this was everything he had been hoping for.
Chapter 8
Since she woke up that day, Sarah hadn't felt like doing much of anything, she
sat around the house most of the day trying to do anything but think of him. At
times it proved to be impossible, her thoughts drifting back to their
conversation at the school that night, and their heart breaking last kiss.
That’s' all she really had left of him, a kiss that would always haunt her.
Yesterday was her last day on set with him and she'd done everything in her
power to avoid him. She did feel guilty about never really getting a chance to
say goodbye, but in a way she felt it had all been said the night before.
She sat on the couch eating mouthfuls of ice cream, and watching old movies
mostly with sad endings, she couldn't stand the ones where everything worked out
for the couple, as it was not the way real life worked. She noticed a flash
outside then suddenly rain started pouring down 'good a storm, now this actually
just gives me more reason to stay inside.’ she thought to herself.
Standing on her front step he ran his hand through his hair and tried to think
of the right way to tell her. As much as he tried he just couldn't put it all
together, his wife was no longer pregnant. He knew he wanted to be with Sarah,
and that he wanted to leave Ingrid, but there's a difference between knowing and
doing.
He couldn't just keep standing there thinking of what to say to her, he would
know what to say when he seen her. Feeling the first drops of rain hit his face
he finally brought his hand up, and he knocked on the door as the thunder shook
the ground behind him.
When there was no answer, he nearly started panicking, he couldn’t handle the
thought of her not being there, when he had to tell her something that would
change everything.
The rain started pouring down and he was getting soaked, he heard the thunder
crackle behind him and once again started knocking on her door, knowing this
time that if there was no answer then she definitely wasn't home.
With the television turned up loud she sunk even deeper into the couch after
setting down her tub of ice cream. When the thunder started she jumped at first
thinking that it might have been someone banging on her door, but she realized
it was just the weather and relaxed again. Focusing back on the movie she was
startled once more when she heard banging again and this time realized that
maybe there was indeed someone at her front door.
Slowly rising to her feet, she made her way to the door wearing only a snug pair
of faded jeans and an over sized navy jumper that David had once lent her when
they had been rehearsing in his trailer, and she had been cold.
She still remembered when she had tired to return it and he told her that it
looked much better on her. Brushing aside the memory she turned the knob of her
front door.
David was about to concede defeat and turn away until he saw the handle turning.
When she opened the door she was shocked to see him standing there. "David." she
said in a soft whisper that could barley be heard over the thunder.
He swore he could listen to the way she said his name for the rest of his life,
looking down at her, as he was dripping wet from the rain he had nothing to say,
he had but one thing on his mind.
Taking the two steps that separated them, he cupped her head in his hands and
brought his lips to hers, kissing her with the passion and love he'd never felt
before.
Feeling his lips against hers she lost herself in him. She knew no one could
ever kiss her like that, but David. Although as much as she was enjoying his
lips against hers, she brought her hands up to his shoulders and pushed him
away.
"Stop, we can't... " she said as she took a few steps back away from him.
"Yes we can." he said trying to kiss her again.
"No David, just stop!" she demanded.
Letting himself in he closed the door behind himself as Sarah just stared on in
disbelief. "You can’t just tell me your wife is pregnant and that we have to
walk away from each other, only to come here and kiss me like that." she spat.
"Sarah I'm sorry but you don't understand."
“No you don’t understand, you have to stay away from me.” She said sadly.
“You know as well as I do that that’s not possible.” He said walking towards her
like she was his prey.
“David you just have too okay.” She said fighting back the tears.
“I can’t, there’s something I need to tell you.”
"What?" she asked confused.
"Ingrid isn’t pregnant."
At his words she felt like jumping up and down for joy, or at least jumping on
him. But she was a little shocked to do either, she also felt kind of bad for
David, she knew how much he wanted a child and now his wife wasn't pregnant. She
had a million questions running through her head, she decided to address the
first and most important one.
"Is that why your here?" she asked.
"Yes." he smiled.
"Oh." she said the disappointment clearly evident in her voice. "So you just
thought that since she's not pregnant, that what David, you and I?"
"Well it does make things a lot easier." he said taking another step closer to
her.
"How can say that? You told me you didn't want me, that you wanted to be with
your wife and your child, and now that things don't work out you come running
back to poor little Sarah cause you know she'll take you back."
"What? Sarah no I never said I never wanted you, I always did, I still do. I
chose being there for a baby I thought I was having over you because I thought
it was the right thing to do. I know now that it wasn't, I even kind of knew
before but I just couldn't think straight everything was just so confusing." he
said shaking his head.
"Tell me about it." she sighed "Look David I still don’t' think it's a good idea
you being here, we can't ever be-"
"Why." he asked cutting her off.
"David you're married." she said softly.
"I know but I'm not in love with her, I'm in love with you." he said stepping
closer again.
"Don't." she said putting up a hand, trying to resist and step back away from
him.
He paused looking at her, slowly he brought his hand up to cup her cheek "Tell
me that you don't feel the same and I'll never say it again." he said as his
thumb caught her stray tear.
"I-I... " she couldn't say anything, she couldn't do anything but cry "I'm so in
love with you." she said as she looked up at him.
Instantly he wrapped his arms around her and brought her lips to his. He kissed
her so fiercely at first, before slowing down and simply letting his tongue
explore her sweet mouth.
Pulling away she pressed her brow to his as he walked her backwards to her room.
"You look so good in my clothes." he said, admiring the sight that she was
swimming in his jumper.
"But I think you'd look so much better out of them." he said in a husky whisper
as he pressed his lips to her neck.
