Chapter 17
Two whole months had passed since that night at the bar, and yet it was still
the hottest gossip in town.
When David had heard that Sarah had denied the incident ever having taken place,
he went along with the same lie, telling numerous reporters that he wasn't even
in the bar's vicinity that night.
People were suspicious, but David couldn't have cared less, he loved her, he
would be proud to tell the world, if only she still felt the same.
Christmas came and went as did the New Year. And in the months since Sarah had
broken off their relationship, David had spent them begging her to rethink her
decision. Now being the end of January he didn't want to even consider starting
of February without her.
But realistically, David knew that if this last attempt wasn't going to work,
than that was it, he was going to give up, and give her the peace she
desperately wanted.
Pulling his car over to the side of the road a few doors down from her home,
David knew that if he were to pull up out the front again she would only do what
she had done every other time for the past two months. Ignore him.
Getting out of his car, he started his walk towards her house, coming up to her
drive; he froze when spotting her out on her front porch.
Clenching his fists, David wasn’t just furious, he was heartbroken. There stood
the love of his life, kissing someone else… kissing Freddie.
His jaw tensed and he had an undeniable urge to do Freddie a lot more damage
than he had the last time. The only thing was that he had no right. Sarah wasn't
his anymore, and besides, she was kissing him back.
He waited another minute, watching as the couple kissed goodnight was torturing
him, but at least she wasn't inviting him in.
When Freddie walked off and got into his car, Sarah waited till he took off.
Smiling as he did so.
There was something about him that made her feel good, just being around him put
a smile on her face. Sure he wasn't David, and he didn't even come close to
making her feel what David had during the good times, but it was enough, at
least she wasn't hurting anymore.
As she was about to turn and unlock the door to her home, she felt the light
sprinkle on her face. Looking up at the dark sky, the blonde noticed that that
sprinkle might just be about to turn into a heavy downpour.
As she turned her attention back to the door, eager to get inside and out of the
sudden rain, that was when she spotted him out of the corner of her eye.
Without even facing him she asked “What are you doing here?” It came out cold,
the only way she found herself speaking to him the past couple of months.
“What do you think Sarah; I'm here to convince you to give us another chance.”
David stated quickly clearing the distance between them before she made it
inside her home.
“No way, I've told you every day for the past two months that we're finished, I
don't want to get hurt, and all you bring with you is pain. Oh and look,” She
said gesturing at the rain “the weather, where ever you go there always seems to
be a huge storm cloud following you. I can't live like that anymore, I guess I'm
just like Buffy in a way, I need sunshine and someone who won’t hurt me, someone
that isn't you.” She knew she was being cruel but it was the only way to get rid
of him.
At first David didn't know what to say, he was stunned that she could have just
said the things she had. “So you're saying that that's all we had? That that's
all I'd ever brought into your life. Well I'm sorry Sarah, but I don't seem to
remember hearing you scream your complaints that night, in fact I do remember
the screaming, and I think I have a clear memory of what I was doing to you
while you were.” David smirked as he recalled the memory, it was their first
time together, and it had been perfection, in every sense of the word, a night
that he would live to never forget.
“You make me sick!” She spat, before once again searching for the right key to
her home.
“No Sarah I don't, I make you feel just about everything else, like love,
passion, but tell me when that freak kissed you just then, was it even close to
how I make you feel when I kiss you?” He whispered barely inches from her lips.
“First of all that freak is my boyfriend, so please remember that. And as for
how he makes me feel, well it has nothing what so ever to do with you, so but
out and leave me alone.” She hissed
When she admitted that Freddie was in fact her boyfriend, it hurt David like a
knife through the heart, but he wouldn't let it show, damn it he had to convince
her to take him back.
The rain was pouring down now, and both were soaked through, standing there,
looking into each other's eyes, their passion blazing within their orbs.
“You didn't answer my question.” was his only reply.
Sarah was irritated, she didn't have time for games, and she didn't really fancy
the idea of standing out in the rain all night, so instead of spending even more
time beating around the bush she simply asked him what he was talking about.
“What question?”
David had an idea that she only asked that as a way to avoid answering him, and
so he did the only thing he thought was right in that very moment. “This one.”
He said as he quickly cleared the last step between them. Cupping her face with
the palms of his hands he kissed her.
At first Sarah tried to push him away, pounding her fists against his chest, but
after a few seconds she gave herself up to his lips and returned his kiss with
the same intense passion he showed her.
Only in the last second did she finally push him away.
“Don't ever do that again.” She shouted, as if yelling at him was the only way
to get it through his head. It wasn't fair, he wasn't allowed to do things like
that, to kiss her like that, when she was trying to put him behind her and move
on with her life.
“I think I just proved my point.” He smirked; after all she had just kissed him
back.
“Oh you think so huh? Well guess what, even if you did, it means nothing; I’m
never going to go back to being your sex slave, what I have with Freddie isn't
worth losing for that.” She was being honest; it really wasn't, even if just the
thought of sex with David made her knees weak.
“Are you sleeping with him?” He questioned, hoping and praying that she wasn't.
“That's none of your business, now please, leave me alone.” She begged, this
wasn't a conversation she wanted to be having with him. She wasn't sleeping with
Freddie, but that had nothing to do with David, they were just taking things
slowly to avoid being hurt.
“Okay.” David reluctantly agreed “I will, after tonight, I will never come near
you again, but I need to ask you one last question.”
“What?” She asked with a sigh, she was glad that he was finally getting it
through his head, but then there was that little part of her that didn't ever
want him to leave her alone.
“Do you love him?” He questioned, if anything this was the one thing he really
wanted to know, at least for his own peace of mind.
Funnily enough, he never got an answer, he waited and waited, and finally he
whispered “I thought as much.” Then walked away, leaving her to search for a key
to her home once again.
**********
As Sarah made her way inside her home her heart broke once again, it wasn't
fair, she had spent the past two months getting over him and now this. Brushing
her fingers over her mouth, she could still feel his lips upon hers.
As the crackle of thunder ripped through the air, Sarah stripped out of her
rained soaked clothing and headed straight for a hot bubble bath, where she
could cry, and pretend that David was there, holding her, keeping her warm
through the storm, much like he had on their first night together.
**********
The moment David woke the next morning, he did the smartest thing he'd done
since first telling Sarah he loved her. He filed for divorce.
Whether Sarah was a part of his life or not, he needed to get it dealt with.
Chapter 18
For weeks now Sarah had been dreading this very day. Because seeing the one man
that the small blonde had tried on countless occasions to completely erase from
her mind, only to come to the conclusion that it truly was impossible, bothered
her much more than she liked.
Now, so many months since their unnecessary split (not that she realized that's
what it had been) here she was, back on the set of Angel, David within sight for
an entire day. How on earth was she meant to deal with that?
Was it that God really hated her that much that he would always find ways to
punish her? It sure as hell seemed that way when David was continuously thrown
in her face. But then again, maybe that wasn't the case, maybe it was the
complete opposite, and he was trying to show her what she was refusing to see.
That David really was the one person she was meant to be with.
What was it about those three words that drove her insane? There was no such
thing as meant to be... in the end you were just meant to spend your life with
whomever it was that you could call a friend, and trust with anything. Funny
that months ago she'd figured that love played an important part as well. Not
anymore, love hurt too much to be good for her.
That was why things never worked with David, and that was also why she had moved
on... to Freddie. After numerous dates Sarah found that she was slowly starting
to fall for his charm, he really did seem to be the perfect guy. The only
problem was... he wasn't David, and that pesky little thing called love that she
swore she could do without, was missing.
But that wasn't important, all that was, was that Freddie was great to be
around, and it didn't matter that when he did simple things like hold her hand,
kiss her, or take her in his arms. There were no fireworks, no butterflies,
nothing.
Besides that was why she had decided to take things slowly with him, there was
no way that she wanted to rush into a full on relationship only to regret it
later. The other reason was that she just hadn't been able to bring herself to
make love to him. Every time he touched her, she would flinch, as though her
body knew that only David was allowed to touch her like that.
So as the weeks and then months passed by, Sarah tried as hard as she could to
put David behind her and once and for all move on with her new life with
Freddie.
Tomorrow night was the night... that was one thing she was sure of. Tomorrow she
was going to close the last chapter of her life by opening a new one. After
today the blonde hopefully wouldn't have to see David again, or at least for a
while. And of course that could only mean good things.
The funny thing was, her heart seemed to object, and think it was the end of the
world. If only she knew what to listen with. But no, her stubborn mind seemed to
be winning over.
All that Sarah wanted was to get through this day as quickly as possible, and go
home where she could concentrate on nothing other than tomorrow night.
**********
Each time she walked passed, David wanted to stop her and talk to her, but
instead he did nothing but look away. As much as it tore his heart up into a
million little pieces, he just couldn't bring himself to say a word.
Truth be told he was afraid… afraid that she would say something along the lines
of ‘I hate you’. And as it was bad enough that she couldn't stand the sight of
him, to be despised would just be pure torture.
Every time they waited for the director to call action, they both averted the
others gaze, unable to look each other in the eye, as it was all just too
painful. Each take for each scene was horrible. All of it felt too real, like at
times it wasn't so much about their characters, it was about them, about
everything that had happened in the last few months, as their characters
reactions seemed based on their own.
Lines like “I have someone new in my life, that I love.” Set David on edge, all
he could think was that she was referring to the bastard he caught her kissing
the other night, and that this wasn't about Buffy at all.
An anger he never wanted her to be the recipient of surfaced, and there was
nothing David could do to push it aside. How could she just openly admit that
she was in love with Freddie? As a matter of fact how could any woman love the
freak, that David could have sworn was gay? Even though that was just based on
the fact that he despised the fellow actor for laying his hands on what he still
thought to be his girl.
But she wasn't.
In between takes for the last scene they had together, he couldn't look at her,
wouldn't... didn't even want to talk to her. Everything she had just said in
character, David went ahead and took it the wrong way. Thinking she was in fact
talking directly to him.
As he wandered around the set, he spotted Eliza, about to leave as she had
finished for the day.
Leaving Sarah standing there all alone as the crew adjusted the lighting, David
caught up to the brunette. He wanted to have a chat with her before she left, as
anything that would take his mind off Sarah would be welcomed.
**********
Of all days this had to be one of those that just seemed to drag on, or maybe it
was the company she kept that made Sarah feel like it was never going to be over
with.
With every scene she found herself holding back the tears, she wouldn't cry,
wouldn't give him the pleasure of seeing her when she was weak. Had they of
still been together, than today would have been a day she cherished, but no, it
didn't turn out that way.
At the last second the writers went about tweaking the script, making sure that
every word and gesture would play out their visions. And Sarah just sat back,
watching it all, yet not really watching at the same time. When she heard him
erupt in laughter on the other side of the set, she turned almost instantly,
unable to help it.
That was when she spotted Eliza and David sharing a joke. The Brunette had her
hand splayed across David's chest, bracing herself as she almost fell to the
floor from the laughter alone.
A simple joke between two friends, that was all it was, that was all it was
meant to be. And yet, Sarah didn't see it as that. But David's next move was
what really stung.
The actress sat in her chair and watched as he took Eliza into his arms, and
gave her a long hug, followed by a kiss on the cheek. And that was it, that was
when Sarah knew she just had to get out of there.
Grabbing a hold of her jacket, not even bothering to change, Sarah took off,
heading straight for her car. She ignored the calls from the producers, and just
kept on walking, as she was positive that the amount of footage they had was
surely enough.
She had to admit that she hated herself for doing this; it was so unlike her,
Sarah was after all the kind of actress to stay until she'd given it a hundred
and ten percent. But today was an exception.
It wasn't till she was about to open her car door that she heard him coming up
behind her. Fumbling with the keys, trying to find the necessary one to click
the button and unlock the doors, she ignored him. The sooner she got home, the
better, as Sarah had no desire what so ever to be talking to him.
“Where are you going?” David asked as he came up beside her, he knew that they
still had more takes to do, so why was she leaving?
She gave him no response; in fact the blonde managed to do a very good job of
ignoring his presence, as she found the desired key, and quickly unlocked the
doors with a simple click.
Even though he had pretty much ignored her all day, he didn't want this, the
moment he saw her storm off David had followed just wanting her to stick around
a little longer. Sure the man was sick and tired of chasing after her, but
still, he couldn't help but want her more than anything, that would never
change. So now as she slipped into the driver’s seat, he reacted, grabbing a
hold of the door, not letting her close it.
As she pulled on her door, the blonde noticed that it didn't seem to want to
shut, that was when she noted that David was the reason behind that. “Let go.”
she insisted, knowing even before it was said that he wouldn't listen.
“Right, so you can leave without finishing your scenes just to be with Teddie.”
David spat, knowing full well that he had mispronounced her boyfriend’s name.
“Freddie.” The blonde corrected, as she continued to pull on the handle, trying
to close the door so she could just leave.
“Whatever” He returned, it aggravated him that she would mention the other mans
name in his presence, was she just trying to wedge that knife in a little
deeper?
“Like you can talk.” Sarah quickly returned, meaning what she had just witnessed
with Eliza.
David glared back at the blonde as they both struggled with the door. What the
hell was she trying to say? He wasn't the one that had suddenly moved on; no in
fact he was still head over heels in love with her.
“I'm not the one that's screwing someone else.” He spat, for months now that was
the one thought that was slowly killing him. The idea that she would invite
someone inside her home, her bed, and herself, was sure to be the thing that
would send him to an early grave.
Biting back the tears that slowly welled within her eyes, Sarah was speechless,
how could he just be so damn cruel when he was the one that had hurt her? “I
hate you!” She chocked, wishing that he would just get his hands off her car and
let her get the hell out of there.
Right then that so called knife managed to slice right through his heart. This
wasn't what he wanted, never. That was when he realized it was truly over. And
as depressing as giving up was, there really was nothing left for him to do. “I
give up! You were right all along okay, I'm not right for you, and all I do is
hurt you. I'm sorry, after this I will never annoy you again. I mean it this
time.” Gently letting go of the door so that it wouldn't slam in her face he
said the last thing he needed to. “There's just one thing you need to know...
and that is that no matter what happens to you, or who you spend the rest of
your life with, no one and I mean no one will ever love you like I do.”
And that was it, with that David turned and walked away. He'd made up his mind
and he wouldn't look back.
Sitting in the car, the door still wide open, silent tears fell from her tired
eyes. It was as though she finally realized she never wanted him to stop trying,
if only she had just given him the benefit of the doubt when he'd asked for it.
But no, being so stubborn stopped her just as it did now, from listening to her
heart when it cried out in pain, and begged her to run after him.
As Sarah sat there, the keys to her car in her hand, and the door still wide
open, she realized the only person left to blame about her broken heart was
herself.
